iDEAL is the most popular payment method in The Netherlands, but it was - up until recently - offered via other players in the payments ecosystem, leading to an inconsistent and decentralised experience. I joined the project to relaunch iDEAL as the gatekeeper of an improved payment experience, with additional features. Towards the end of 2022 I was completing a course in accessible design. Learning more about the subject made me consider that the implemented designs had room for improvement in terms of accessibility. Asides from needing to be compliant with accessibility standards as part of the European Accessibility Act, providing an inclusive experience would mean we could better serve our incredibly broad user base.
  • Identified areas for improvement in code, UI and copy, with the help of a WCAG auditor and results from accessibility testing.
  • Iterated designs that formed the basis for an accessible design system and template library.
  • Testing with 100 users showed a preference for the new designs, with 74% going for the final iteration.
  • Presented the work to the entire team at iDEAL to spread awareness and get buy-in.
  • Received management approval to implement the changes.

I led this project, enlisting the help of an organisation specialised in testing for inclusivity. I also worked closely with the frontend developers and our UX copywriter to implement the findings. I conducted the following:

  • Discover: accessibility audit, accessibility testing
  • Define: accessibility report, problem statement
  • Design and deliver: iterative wireframes, prototypes, user testing, high-fidelity UI designs, template library, optimised responsive behaviour, accessible design system
